What is a Ro-Ro port?
Ro-Ro is short for roll-on/roll-off. A Ro-Ro port is a terminal where freight and passenger vehicles drive straight on and off the ship over a ramp, instead of being lifted aboard by crane like shipping containers. Trucks, trailers, and cars arrive on the approach road, clear a freight or check-in gate, wait in a marshalling yard, then drive up the ramp onto the vessel's deck under their own power or hauled by a terminal tug.
That speed is the whole point, and also the risk. Freight and passengers share the same gates around the clock, every trailer has to match a booking and a manifest, and dangerous goods need the right paperwork and placarding before they roll aboard. One mismatched plate or missed ADR placard stops the lane and holds the sailing. A Ro-Ro port lives or dies on how fast, and how accurately, it clears what comes through the gate.
